Amos 6:1-7

New International Version

Woe to the Complacent

6 Woe to you^(A) who are complacent^(B) in Zion,
    and to you who feel secure^(C) on Mount Samaria,^(D)
you notable men of the foremost nation,
    to whom the people of Israel come!^(E)
²Go to Kalneh^(F) and look at it;
    go from there to great Hamath,^(G)
    and then go down to Gath^(H) in Philistia.
Are they better off than^(I) your two kingdoms?
    Is their land larger than yours?
³You put off the day of disaster
    and bring near a reign of terror.^(J)
⁴You lie on beds adorned with ivory
    and lounge on your couches.^(K)
You dine on choice lambs
    and fattened calves.^(L)
⁵You strum away on your harps^(M) like David
    and improvise on musical instruments.^(N)
⁶You drink wine^(O) by the bowlful
    and use the finest lotions,
    but you do not grieve^(P) over the ruin of Joseph.^(Q)
⁷Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;^(R)
    your feasting and lounging will end.^(S)

⁶But godliness with contentment^(A) is great gain.^(B) ⁷For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.^(C) ⁸But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.^(D) ⁹Those who want to get rich^(E) fall into temptation and a trap^(F) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰For the love of money^(G) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith^(H) and pierced themselves with many griefs.^(I)

Final Charge to Timothy

¹¹But you, man of God,^(J) flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,^(K) faith, love,^(L) endurance and gentleness. ¹²Fight the good fight^(M) of the faith. Take hold of^(N) the eternal life^(O) to which you were called when you made your good confession^(P) in the presence of many witnesses.

¹⁷Command those who are rich^(A) in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth,^(B) which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God,^(C) who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.^(D) ¹⁸Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds,^(E) and to be generous and willing to share.^(F) ¹⁹In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves^(G) as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of^(H) the life that is truly life.
